Land Conservation - Protecting the Wilderness and Defending Undeveloped Land
By 2050, the world's population is expected to exceed 9 billion people. This is particularly troubling because most of the world's best land is already being cultivated. To sustain the world's population, we will have to find an alternative to plowing over forests, wilderness and prairies. We must find a way to produce more food on less land.
While California's farmlands continue to diminish, the demands upon California's family farmer to enhance crop yields will only increase, in order to feed a growing world.
This is just one of the reasons biotechnology holds great promise. The technology has the potential to preserve our family farms and remaining wilderness by making existing farmland even more productive. The benefits of biotech crops are "farm-size-neutral." This means that a farmer who plants one acre or 1,000 acres will recognize the same benefits - including the ability for an increased yield.
