Improving Water Quality
Biotech crops also provide the ability to reduce tillage on our land and preserve precious topsoil. The direct benefit of this technology is that farmers have reduced soil erosion by more than 1 billion tons every year. The result is cleaner, more plentiful and more affordable water. Less erosion also saves U.S. consumers an estimated $3.5 billion in costs for water treatment and storage, water maintenance, navigation, flooding and recreation. [Fawcett, R., Towery, D. 2002. Conservation Tillage and Plant Biotechnology. Conservation Technology Information Center (CTIC).]
